"A good guide never has to claim that he's 'good'--the smiles on his clients faces will do that for him!"
Offering a unique guide service where I specialize in one or two person Chinook Salmon and Steelhead fishing trips on Michigan’s famed Muskegon, White, Grand, Big Manistee and Pere Marquette Rivers!
My name is Steven Hutchins and to put it mildly, I have a passion for Michigan river chinook salmon and steelhead fishing. With over 20 years experience fishing for these species on Michigan's rivers, I've accrued a great deal of knowledge on salmon and steelhead and passing along that knowledge is something that I've always enjoyed doing--be it by various articles in outdoor magazines, seminars or on the water guided trips. In addition, I'm a member of the DNR's Coldwater Steering Committee, The Great Lakes Citizen's Advisory Board and the founder of The Michigan River Anglers Association. In addition, I'm very active in river clean ups, habitat restoration and other projects that "give back" to the resource.
.
When booking a chinook salmon or Michigan steelhead fishing trip with Hutchins Guide Service, not only will you be put in a position to catch river chinook salmon and steelhead ethically and in the spirit of fair chase, but your day will also involve me teaching you the why’s, how’s and where’s of this exciting sport. This is as hands on as it gets—with the goal being to have fun, catch fish and hopefully shorten the learning curve if you're a beginner!
My 14’ long, wide side jet boat, The Flying Hutchman, certainly isn’t full of frills, but it gets us into tight water and narrow rivers where excellent fishing awaits! Where other, bigger jet boats can’t squeeze into, I can—where ever the fish are, we’ll go! Guided Michigan Chinook Salmon fishing trips are mainly on the Big Manistee River or White River. Guided Michigan steelhead trips are on the Grand River or Muskegon River. During the summer months, I focus on river catfish in the Grand River or Kalamazoo river.
.
While there are plenty of reputable and knowledgeable “flies only” guides, I specialize in fishing spawn or throwing crank baits for migratory Michigan Chinook Salmon and Steelhead. Skein Eggs, or “gut” as it’s been nicknamed within salmon and steelhead circles, is one of the most effective methods for taking fish, bar none. On any given Big Manistee River or White River Chinook Salmon fishing trip, we’ll alternate between fishing eggs under a bobber or throwing crankbaits until we find out whichever they want best! For Michigan steelhead trips, we’ll focus on spawn or waxworm presentations.
No matter which method we use, you'll experience a fun, informative and AFFORDABLE day on the river! I have the capability to run one or two-person trips. Most guides prefer not to book one person trips--and that's exactly one of my specialties. Can't get "the boys" gathered up for a day of salmon and steelhead fishing? Contact me--I offer affordable daily trips where I'll put you on as many fish as possible! Michigan Chinook Salmon...steelhead...I have the experience to confidently offer this service to you.
My business philosophy is simple: I'll work hard to put you in a position to catch fish and while the bite can be tough sometimes, I'll be honest and upfront and I will not book a trip if the conditions are not ideal or the fish simply aren't there. In short, if the Chinook Salmon or Michigan Steelhead aren't in the rivers yet, I won't give you some glowing report just to secure your business. I'll give you an honest, up to date assessment of various rivers and if you're better off waiting a couple weeks, for example, I'll tell you that straight up.

"Steve,
I wanted to touch base and let you know my son and I had a great time on our recent chartered trip. We were put on fish and landed our share even though the weather and conditions were less than favorable. You showed your knowledge and experience. We were impressed with your professionalism and you proved you do not need a $25,000 or more boat to catch fish. We enjoyed your company as well. We will return in 2011 and I am looking forward to it.
Thanks again!!!
Todd Smith"
" Hey Hutch,
You took me out with Paul Clark to get my first ever steelhead. I wanted to say thank you and that your the man! I hope that you get many more people on fish like you did for me. I've been hooked ever since! Thanks again!

"Hutch,
Thanks again. I had a great time. It was a cold morning for my blood, but a few nice fish made it worth it.

"Steve was kind enough to take me out on the Muskegon River. I was new to steelhead fishing and didn’t have a clue. I got a full 1 day crash course and came out addicted to steelhead fishing. I learned more in 6 hours than the previous 2 months of fishing on my own. Not only did he put me on a bunch of fish, he had a wealth of information about the rivers and fishing in general. He taught me what to look for in the rivers for different times of the year and weather conditions. He clearly demonstrated many techniques and I even ended up buying one of his custom drift rods he put together. Most charters won’t give away the detailed information that Hutch taught me. The best part is Steve is a very likeable guy and easy to talk to. He shared a lot of great stories and there was never a dull moment. He really does want to make you a better fisherman and wants you to ask as many questions as you want. I’ve taken his advice to heart and have recently started catching steelhead on my own. Thanks Hutch for everything you’ve taught me! I highly recommend Steve Hutchins whether you’re a beginner like me or a river veteran."
